One Crew Member Killed in French Mirage 2000D Crash Near Nancy, Search Continues for Second
A French Mirage 2000D fighter jet crashed late Tuesday near the village of Rogéville, northwest of Nancy in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, while returning from a routine training mission to Nancy-Ochey Air Base. The aircraft belonged to Fighter Squadron 2/3 “Champagne” and was carrying a pilot and a weapons systems officer.
Radio and radar contact with the jet was lost around 10:30–10:40 p.m. local time before it went down. On Wednesday morning, the French military announced that the body of one crew member had been recovered, while search operations continue for the second. Air and Space Force spokesman Colonel David Pappalardo confirmed that at least one crew member was unable to eject.
Local residents reported a loud explosion and a fireball in the sky. Debris was located by drone, and large numbers of firefighters, gendarmes, and a helicopter were deployed. The cause of the crash remains unknown. Parallel investigations are under way by the military aviation accident investigation bureau and judicial authorities.

על פי דיווחי חיל האוויר הצרפתי, המטוס שמר על קשר רדיו רציף עם הבסיס עד שלפתע נעלם ממסכי המכ"ם והפסיק להגיב. תושבים באזור דיווחו כי שמעו פיצוץ עז בסביבות השעה 22:30 בלילה והבחינו ב"כדור אש" בשמיים. גורם בחיל האוויר ציין כי ככל הנראה לפחות אחד מאנשי הצוות לא הספיק לנטוש את המטוס טרם הפגיעה בקרקע.
על סיפון המטוס הדו-מושבי שהו שני אנשי צבא: טייס צעיר שהיה בשלבי אימון, וקצין מערכות נשק בעל ניסיון רב. גופתו של איש הצוות שחולצה מזירת ההתרסקות טרם זוהתה באופן רשמי. בחיל האוויר הצרפתי הדגישו כי מדובר בתאונה חריגה ויוצאת דופן, וציינו כי בשלב זה מוקדם לקבוע מה הוביל לאירוע הקטלני.
