Not sure if you're aware, but there's a sunken ship that pokes above the water in the Thames Estuary which is still carrying around 1,400 tonnes of unexploded World War II munitions.
The SS Richard Montgomery is an American Liberty cargo ship that ran aground on a sandbank near Sheerness and Southend in August 1944 after dragging its anchor, subsequently breaking in half. While half of its initial cargo was salvaged, roughly 1,400 tonnes of high explosives remain trapped in its forward holds.
Specialist contractors 'Resolve Marine' launched a £9.5 million project in September 2026 to cut and lift the three remaining visible masts using an underwater platform.
The main bulk of the explosives will remain underwater inside the wreck, as attempting to defuse or remove them is considered too high-risk and could trigger an explosion.
An explosion of the 1,400 tonnes of unexploded ordnance aboard the SS Richard Montgomery would cause severe local devastation, shattering windows in Sheerness, throwing a massive column of water and debris nearly 3,000 meters into the air, and generating a destructive wave.
Estimates for the resulting wave vary. Older reports suggested a destructive wave up to 5 meters (16 feet) high, while revised modern estimates point to a roughly 1-meter wave; both could cause significant coastal flooding in low-lying areas of Kent and Essex.
Too dangerous to detonate, and too dangerous to move, the explosives will sit exactly where they are until a suitable plan can be made.

🇬🇧 Britain has begun a £9.5 MILLION operation on a WWII shipwreck containing roughly 1,400 tonnes of explosives just 1.5 miles off the Kent coast.
The SS Richard Montgomery sank in 1944 while carrying munitions for Allied forces, leaving thousands of bombs inside its deteriorating wreck and prompting a permanent exclusion zone around the site.
Crews are now cutting away its three 82-year-old masts, because authorities fear their eventual collapse could disturb the explosives below.
To put things in context of Britain’s WWII hangover: estimates suggest thousands of German bombs may still be buried on land, while roughly 100,000 tonnes of unexploded munitions could remain in waters around the British Isles.
